Disney have had plans for an origin story for the fur-crazy villain of 101 Dalmatians for over a year, and now they can finally make a start on it with Alex Timbers in the director’s chair.
Emma Stone is still attached to play the lead, and Jez Butterworth is currently working on a script. The film will be following how Cruella became the dangerous and controversially fur-obsessed villain from the original animation - and, hopefully, how she ended up with a name like ‘Cruella’.
Timbers was set to direct the Broadway musical version of Disney’s smash hit Frozen, but left in August due to creative differences. His background is mostly in theatre work - but, with a villain as dramatic and theatrical as Cruella, perhaps that’s exactly what this film needs.
Disney is hoping to start shooting Cruella next year.
