The Ex Machina and soon-to-be Tomb Raider star may well be joining Ben Wheatley's new monster movie.
Freakshift is the latest project on Ben Wheatley's slate, described as "an all-guns-blazing action thriller about a band of misfits who hunt down and kill nocturnal underground monsters." Talk around it describes it as a weirder, murkier Ghostbusters-style tale. Wheatley is directing from a script co-written with wife and long-time collaborator Amy Jump.
Whatever it is, this writer is on board. Ben Wheatley and Amy Jump have made (in this writer's opinion) modern classic after modern classic, with firm favourites of mine like Kill List, A Field in England and High-Rise under their collective belt, as well as Free Fire, a self-contained retro action movie that's getting a lot of exciting buzz around it, and is out later this month.
The possible addition of Alicia Vikander is just the icing on the cake. Vikander has turned in some killer performances, particularly in genre fair like Ex Machina. Seeing her bring it in a Ben Wheatley film is sure to be a real treat. Wheatley has been working with a slew of great actors recently, and always seems to bring out the best in them. Seriously, check out Luke Evans' turn as Wilder in High-Rise, the man is a revelation.
Freakshift is reportedly lining itself up for production-start in August. Watch this space!
