Up until now, Pixar’s Cars series has been bright, lighthearted and family friendly - but the first teaser for the upcoming third film is uncharacteristically dark.
While the first film was a fun, heartwarming tale about finding your true home and its sequel a ridiculous, farcical spy adventure, Pixar might be taking a much more serious and heavy turn with the third film.
The teaser shows Lightning McQueen in one of his high-speed NASCAR races - pretty regular stuff so far, since the franchise has been primarily focused on his life as a race car. But then, one of his tyres bursts and, with a sickening crunch of metal, we see a slow-mo shot of his heavily damaged body (and pieces of burning metal, which we can only assume are from his body too) hurtling through the air, and the ominous tagline “From this moment, everything will change.”
It’s an abrupt and somewhat startling turn, that’s for sure: for a franchise that, up until now, has been colourful and cartoony and easy to switch off to, this definitely wasn’t what anyone expected from Pixar. The trailer seems to be taking a different approach visually, too - the bright colours and cartoony style have been substituted for a more realistic approach.
As of right now, we have no idea just how dark Pixar is planning to go - but we’ll find out next year when the movie is released. In the meantime, you can see the trailer below and let us know what you think.
