If there’s one thing that I’ve always said the world was missing, it's Channing Tatum as a mermaid. And it’s finally happening. No, seriously, we’re going to be seeing Channing Tatum as a mermaid in the cinema. The Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street star is going to be a mermaid. With a tail and everything. That’s a thing now.
Splash will be remembered by a lot of people for being the 1984 chick-flick that starred Daryl Hannah as the leading role; a mermaid, joined by Tom Hanks and Eugene Levy, and directed by Ron Howard. The movie was also the first film to be released under Disney’s Touchstone Pictures label due to the mild mature content of the film (we saw some butts, scandalous).
Disney are setting up Splash to be one of their many modern remakes but with a twist. They’ll be doing a gender swap and setting Channing Tatum up in the leading fish-tailed role with Jillian Bell also playing the role that Tom Hanks originally played. The movie will look at Bell as she is rescued from drowning by the majestic mermaid that is Channing Tatum.
I don’t know if you can tell but I’m enjoying the thought of Channing Tatum as a mermaid way too much; it’s hilarious.
Ron Howard will be on to produce the film as well and Marja-Lewis Ryan is on board for writing duties but a director has yet to be confirmed.
