Community alumni Donald Glover has been cast as a young Lando Calrissian in Lord & Miller's Han Solo prequel film.
Glover will be joining Alden Ehrenreich, who's playing Han himself. Both actors are rising stars, with Glover coming off a fantastic turn in the utterly delightful Magic Mike XXL, and as an eccentric NASA scientist in The Martian (as well as his well-received new comedy-drama series Atlanta, and an unnamed part in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Ehrenreich having lit up the screen earlier this year in the Coens' understated marvel Hail, Caesar!
Even for a prequel skeptic like this writer, this film is quickly becoming a tempting proposition just based on the talent involved. The directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, already have a deserved reputation for taking what are often considered bad ideas (or even non-starters) and turning them into incredibly entertaining and intelligent cinema - just look at 21 Jump Street, or the brilliance that is The Lego Movie.
Also, the screenplay is being penned by Lawrence Kasdan (the man behind the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark), along with his son Jon. This deal is getting better all the time.
We still don't have a title, but the film is reportedly set for a May 2018 release date.
