One of our favourite additions to the Fast & Furious franchise has definitely been Helen Mirren. Sure there’s the walking masses of muscle that are Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson but they don’t command half of the presence that Mirren does. We now have the first snap of Mirren in the film but also some bad news about her role in the film.
Helen Mirren’s addition to the Fast & Furious franchise came as a bit of a surprise to everyone. Although she’s not a stranger to action movie as evident with Red and Red 2, we never really saw the woman who played the Iron Lady as starring in a petrol-fuelled action flick. But that’s exactly what she’s doing. Pictured below is the first image we have of her from the film from Vin Diesel’s Instagram account. It doesn’t exactly show much except Vin Diesel whispering, what I can only assume to be, his confessions that he wishes he was as tall as Dwayne Johnson.
Neither Mirren or Diesel himself have given away anything about Mirren’s role in the film. All we know is that she’ll be playing Magdalena, an ex-CIA agent who is recruited by Johnson’s character to help the Fast 8 crew defeat the newest baddie Cipher, played by Charlize Theron. It reportedly a small role however so don’t get your hopes up for a Theron VS Mirren showdown, as awesome as that would be.
Mirren has voiced her disappointment at the fact her role is so small that she won’t be getting to drive in the film. She has said before that she loves to drive and really wanted to get some action in this film. She didn’t hold back any punches either when voicing her opinion of not having any driving scenes, saying “I wanted to be driving, but unfortunately, I’m not. Maybe that will come in the future, in Fast & Furious 12... I’m probably one of the few people on the set who know how to drive a gearshift car. I doubt the Rock knows... But I do. I know how to double declutch.” Take that, Johnson; Mirren’s calling you out.
Fast 8 will race into cinemas in the UK on 14th April 2017.
