The first image of Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright's upcoming historical war drama Darkest Hour has been released.
Oldman certainly looks the part. He's set to lead an impressive cast, including Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI, John Hurt as Neville Chamberlain, and Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill's wife Clementine. The film will focus on Churchill's actions during the early days of WWII, as Europe tipped over into full-blown conflict. Oldman is the latest in a long line of great actors to have portrayed the wartime Prime Minister on screen, with such actors as Brian Cox, Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall, and Brendan Gleeson having previously donned the jowls and cigars.
The film is looking like it's going to be another period feather in director Joe Wright's cap. His previous work includes the critically-acclaimed hits Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, though he recently ran afoul of critics with last year's Pan. Darkest Hour appears to be Wright returning to somewhat familiar ground.
Darkest Hour is currently shooting, and is set for wide release on the 29th of December, 2017.
