The first official trailer for Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice super-team follow-up is out and, well, it's very Zack Snyder.
Justice League finds Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) recruiting for a team of superheroes - Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) - to take on yer good ol' looming existential threat to the planet. Here's the trailer:
I'm going to be brutally honest here: this trailer really doesn't do anything for me. Once again, we're getting a CGI-heavy, darkness-swathed, rather dour superhero movie, with only a few brief respites through some (admittedly pretty good) comedy beats.
Zack Snyder's penchant for extensive green-screen work and speed-ramping appear to be in full effect, a style which has really started to grate for this writer. It doesn't help that the trailer appears to be cutting around a lot of material, compounding the incomprehensibility of what's already a fairly indiscernible mush of grey and blue flying objects.
But, as we know, trailers certainly aren't everything, so here's hoping Snyder and co. can actually pull this one out of the bag come November. There's still some good stuff going on here: again, the comedy beats work, Gal Gadot is, as ever, killing it as Wonder Woman, and in general everyone seems to be having a lot more fun than they did in Batman v Superman's mammoth 151 minute mope-fest.
However, beyond those few glimmers of hope, Justice League's marketing doesn't exactly fill this writer with confidence. Your mileage may vary.
Justice League hits our screens on the 17th of November.
