Despite the fact that Deadpool 2 has lost both its director and its composer, the film is still going ahead - and Fox are already considering a third movie for the series.
In a report from The Hollywood Reporter about the studio’s trouble with the X-Men franchise with Hugh Jackman ending his role as Wolverine with next year’s Logan, the rising cost of its stars and the struggle to get Gambit off the ground, there is a mention of Fox planning a third Deadpool film with the possibility of him appearing alongside the X-Force.
It would make sense story-wise - Deadpool has … ‘worked’ might be too strong a word - ‘cooperated’ with the X-Force in the comics. Business-wise, Fox has been working on an X-Force film with Kick-Ass 2’s Jeff Wadlow writing the script - though things have been very quiet on that front since hiring Wadlow. Perhaps they’re planning on picking that up after an X-Force cameo in one of the upcoming Deadpool films before spinning them off on their own.
That said, before anyone gets too excited, Deadpool 2 actually needs to make it into production, preferably with a new director and composer (though I’m sure not too many people would mind a film of Ryan Reynolds just improvising on camera). John Wick director David Leitch is the current hot tip for the new director; meanwhile, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are working out the script.
We’ll keep you posted as more news on Deadpool arrives.
