The renowned actor will be starring in a new documentary about his rich and varied life and career.
McKellen: Playing the Part, directed by Joe Stephenson, aims to provide an insight into the life of one of the most recognisable and beloved actors in the industry. While many fans know him as Gandalf from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Magneto from X-Men, his career has encompassed much more than that.
The film is based around an exclusive 14-hour interview with McKellen, which will be interspersed into the documentary with recreations of scenes from his life, rare archival footage of McKellen’s earliest roles on stage and screen, and photographs from McKellen’s own collection.
Stephenson told Variety: “"While Ian has been interviewed many times, and lives a life very much in the public eye, we wanted to talk candidly to him about his journey and philosophy in a way that may not have been done. It’s an honour to tell the story of someone still so relevant and active in our industry, and my hope is that an audience might walk out of the cinema as inspired by his journey as I am, feel like they better understand how he has got to where he is today, and celebrate not just his awesome achievements, but the man himself.”
There is no word on a release date yet - rumour speculates that it will be out next year - but I, for one, am very excited to see this showcase of such a beloved and iconic actor.
