Yes, EmojiMovie is exactly what it sounds like and is apparently going ahead with TJ Miller, James Corden and Ilana Glazer as the lead voice actors. 2016, you really are a weird and wonderful mixed bag.
Full disclosure: this might be the weirdest news story I have to write today. And I just wrote about Guy Ritchie directing Aladdin.
EmojiMovie: Express Yourself follows Gene, a ‘meh’ emoji who, due to faulty wiring, has access to a range of expressions that a ‘meh’ emoji shouldn’t have. Wanting to return to normality, Gene recruits Hi-5 (Corden) who is - you guessed it - a hi-5 emoji, and a code-breaker emoji called Jailbreak (Glazer). As they journey through the different apps on their user’s phone, they find something that threatens the existence of every emoji.
It certainly sounds like it’s going for the popularity and success of Lego Movie, though a lot of what made Lego Movie so brilliant was its nostalgia value, excellent writing, and cleverly done combinations of stop-motion and digital animation. Whether that will translate so well to emojis remains to be seen - though maybe we’ll all be pleasantly surprised. Who’s to say?
Director Anthony Leondis says of the new additions to the cast: “Hi-5 is a high-five emoji who is a highly motivated, and highly dramatic, hand on a mission (sorry), and the brilliantly versatile, ebullient and always lovable James Corden fits this part like a glove (sorry again).
“For the rebel ‘break all the codes’ computer programmer emoji Jailbreak, Ilana Glazer is the kind of singularly free-spirited, fearless and funny actress to make girls really feel the empowered ‘nobody’s gonna keep me in a cage’ attitude this character exudes."
EmojiMovie will be arriving in cinemas on 11 August 2017.
