Last week Ben Affleck made the surprise announcement that DC supervillain Deathstroke would be featured in his upcoming Batman solo movie. Following this announcement we now have confirmation that Affleck has cast TV and movie actor Joe Manganiello as the master assassin.
DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns was the man behind the information we have here. In an interview he let it slip that Joe Manganiello is the man behind the mask of Deathstroke. He didn’t say if he would be appearing in Justice League before Batman but he will be antagonising Batman at some point in the near future.
Deathstroke (pictured left) first appeared as a villain who battled the Teen Titans, the superhero group of the younger heroes like Robin and Beastie Boy. He then moved up to become a villain who regularly fought some of the DC heavy hitters, such as Batman, and has already made in appearance in the Arrow TV series. Just like Batman, Deathstroke, AKA: Slade Wilson, lacks any actual superpowers. He is just a very, very good assassin and mercenary who excels in hand-to-hand combat. This seems quite fitting for Manganiello who is mostly known for being a very large man who’s built like a bloody tank. When Deathstroke first appeared alongside the Caped Crusader in 1991 he was most noted for beating the absolute crap out of him, so he is a villain to be taken seriously.
Manganiello will be known mostly for his TV work, having appeared in several episodes of How I Met Your Mother as the handsome Brad but also he played a leading role in the hit series True Blood. In film he was already in a superhero film as he played Flash Thompson in the Toby MacGuire Spider-Man films. He also starred in the Magic Mike films, just in case you wish to see just how muscular Manganiello is. For research purposes, of course.
At the moment Affleck’s Batman film, which he is writing, directing and starring in, doesn’t have a release date and has yet to begin filming but we will be seeing him return in Justice League on 17th November 2017.
