It was announced very shortly after the launch of the worldwide phenomenon mobile game Pokemon: GO that Legendary Pictures would be making a live action Pokemon movie. Progress is steaming ahead with this announcement as they have now attached writers to the movie.
Pokemon: GO swept the world by storm and is still going strong, rekindling the love for Pokemon like nobody could have ever anticipated. Which this popularity surge it’s no surprise that there’s going to be a movie, but most interestingly the first live action movie for the franchise. Legendary Pictures, known most recently for Godzilla and Warcraft, have acquired the rights to make the movie and have added writers to pen the script.
But before we get you excited, we have to inform that it’s not the Pokemon movie you think it is. It’s going to be a live action adaptation of their Detective Pikachu game. This centres around a talking Pikachu which solves mysteries using information gathered from other Pokemon. So it’s not going to be the action packed live action Pokemon movie of our dreams, sorry kids.
Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) are going to be penning the script. Now, if the prospect of Detective Pikachu didn’t get you excited then these writers definitely should because they’re very good. Alex Hirsch is very well renowned for the Gravity Falls TV series which is incredibly highly regarded. Nicole Perlman not only wrote Guardians of the Galaxy but she is scheduled to write the Captain Marvel movie, if Marvel Studios trust her then I trust her.
The Detective Pikachu movie is in very early development but rumour is that the turn around for this film will be fast with a potential 2017 release, but that is unconfirmed.
