The first film from Studio Ponoc, the production company founded by ex-Studio Ghibli staffers, has got a trailer. Check it out below.
Mary and the Witch's Flower, adapted by screenwriter Riko Sakaguchi from the children's book The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart, follows a little girl who embarks on a magical adventure after being kicked out of her great aunt's house.
The film is being directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who previously directed When Marnie Was There and The Secret World of Arrietty for Studio Ghibli, where he also worked as a long-time animator. Yonebayashi co-founded Studio Ponoc along with producer Yoshiaki Nishimura, and is employing numerous people who also worked at Studio Ghibli. The trailer above promises, hopefully, to recapture that Ghibli magic.
We'll have to wait and see, though, as Mary and the Witch's Flower has a July 2017 release in Japan, with no dates announced as yet for international distribution. Watch this space.
