In the latest addition to the ‘am I seriously writing this’ series, Mel Gibson is in talks to direct a sequel to Suicide Squad.
Despite some very mixed reception to Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. and DC are pushing ahead with a sequel, and Mel Gibson is in talks to direct. Somehow, I feel like that entire sentence shouldn’t be happening.
Gibson, who is known for his very distinctive filmmaking style and his pretty awful opinions of minorities, certainly doesn’t seem like the obvious choice to direct a critically scorned but commercially solid comic book movie. Nothing is set in stone yet, though, so maybe we won’t see the same person who directed The Passion Of The Christ trying to wrangle Jared Leto’s Joker. That could certainly make for an interesting set of interviews down the line.
According to Deadline, negotiations are still quite tentative between Gibson and Warner Bros. right now, so there’s no guarantee that Gibson will actually take the director’s chair. We will have more news on this as it unfolds, so watch this space.
In the meantime, if you want to see Gibson’s latest work, Hacksaw Ridge is currently showing in cinemas.
