Of all the things that come to mind to make an exciting movie, the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. However this stranger-than-fiction true story has been shaping up an impressive cast with Natalie Dormer as the latest addition.
Natalie Dormer will be very well known to UK audiences for her work across TV in The Tudors, Silk and The Fades. She then received international fame for her portrayal of Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones and as Cressida in the last two The Hunger Games movies. Her next project will be starring alongside Sean Penn and Mel Gibson in the true story adaptation of Simon Winchester’s bestselling novel.
The Professor and the Madman centres around Professor James Murray (Gibson) who started to compile the Oxford English Dictionary in 1857. Dr WC Minor (Penn) is in an institute for the criminally insane but submits over 10,000 entries for the ambitious project. Dormer is set to play the widow of one of Dr Minor’s victims who gets entangled in an, um, let’s say ‘interesting’ romantic relationship as Dr Minor tries to help her family from the asylum.
Farhad Safinia (co-writer for Apocalypto) has adapted Winchester’s novel into a script and is also on board to direct the film which Gibson had been trying to get made since 1998. Cameras are set to start rolling this month and we have yet to get a release date.
