The latest trailer has been released for War for the Planet of the Apes, and boy does this movie look like it's going to be a treat.
War for the Planet of the Apes finds Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his burgeoning ape society forced into conflict with an army of humans lead by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson) - what follows is apparently a dark, complex tale of war and vengeance. Get a taste with this new trailer:
It's fair to say that this movie looks like it's going to be well worth the price of admission. This writer got chills (chills!) watching that trailer, and I'm not sure if there's a recent trailer for any movie that's managed to grab me like this one.
That said, if like me you're already all-in on this franchise, you probably don't need this trailer to convince you to go see War for the Planet of the Apes - both Rise and Dawn before it have proven that this is no mere remake/reboot series. These are full-fledged, sneakily-intelligent genre films, replete with incredible acting talent (so when's Andy Serkis getting that Oscar, seriously?), jaw-dropping FX work, and a remarkable fusion of low-down and dirty pulp concepts (apes fighting humans) with some of the best speculative what-if storytelling in current cinema, outside maybe Arrival and some select indie features, and a heavy dose of full-on Greek tragedy-level character work.
They don't simply pay lip service to the (fantastic) 1968 movie and its oddball sequels, but homage and honour them by forging their own path.
So yeah, this writer's pretty excited.
Watch out for War for the Planet of the Apes on the 14th of July. Have I mentioned how strong this summer is for movies? 'Cos damn.
