Pacific Rim 2 has often been referred to as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, and we can now confirm that Maelstrom is indeed the title of the sequel - as well as the fact that production is now finally underway.
Guillermo del Toro has stepped back from directing to be producer and co-writer, handing the reigns over to Stephen S. DeKnight, and a cast including John Boyega and Scott Eastwood has been put together. It is thanks to Boyega that we know the new title for the film, having posted the script cover to his Instagram feed.
While we don’t know the specifics of the plot we do know it will still have plenty of action between the Jaegers (the giant, piloted mechs) and the Kaiju (massive, monstrous creatures from another dimension). We also know that Boyega will be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba in the first film.
Now that the cameras are rolling and the production has begun, DeKnight is aiming for a release on 23 February 2018.
