Patrick Stewart will be voicing one of the most iconic emojis in the upcoming Emoji Movie … and that’s not even the weirdest thing I’m going to write today.
At the top of the list of ‘sentences I never thought I’d read, let alone write’ is the following: Patrick Stewart has been cast as the poo emoji in Emoji Movie.
I’ll give you a minute to let that one process.
Emoji Movie follows Gene (TJ Miller), an emoji created with the code to assume any expression, on his quest to become ‘normal’ and find a place in Textopolis. Emojis ‘Hi-5’ (James Corden) and generic-badass-female - sorry, ‘Jailbreak’ (Ilana Glazer) - team up with Gene to help him out, and the three stumble across a plot that threatens the phone they live in. Stewart is joining the cast alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Steven Wright, Maya Rudolph and Jake T. Austin.
It’s yet to be revealed how the poo emoji will affect the plot - another sentence pretty high up there on the list of things I thought I’d never write - but I can’t imagine Patrick Stewart will let us down, even in a role no-one would ever expect to be attached to his name. It certainly seems like a good chance for him to let loose and have some fun, that’s for sure.
For all my misgivings, maybe Emoji Movie won’t be so bad after all. Maybe it will enjoy Lego Movie levels of success, and we’ll get a poo emoji spinoff akin to Lego Batman. Or maybe it’ll be a trainwreck, but either way I think it might be just a little too early to tell.
We’ll find out on 11 August when it arrives in the UK.
