The Fleabag star could soon be trading London café life for a galaxy far, far away.
Filming is underway for the latest Star Wars standalone, having begun last week under the joke-working title ‘Red Cup’. Variety have reported that Waller-Bridge’s role would be a “CGI-driven performance”, implying that we could expect to see her as an alien or droid of some description, and also says that she would be a “significant part of the ensemble”.
Waller-Bridge’s six-part comedy Fleabag, adapted from her one-woman Edinburgh stage show about a young woman navigating relationships in London (mostly unsuccessfully), debuted on BBC Three and Amazon with a huge amount of positive feedback.
The filthy humour, frank sexuality and bittersweet realism of Fleabag couldn’t be further removed from the sprawling science fiction of Star Wars. But with such praise for Waller-Bridge as ‘the next great hope for British comedy’ and directors Chris Miller (the Jump Street franchise) and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie) at the helm, we can probably expect a healthy dose of humour in this next Star Wars origin story.
Waller-Bridge would be joining Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo and a cast that includes Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke. Filming is in progress in London, aiming for release on 25th May 2018.
