In a movie studio far, far away filming has wrapped up on Star Wars: Episode VIII under the direction of Rian Johnson. After the outrageous critical success of The Force Awakens, all eyes will be on Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII which, according to lead actor Adam Driver, is set to be similar to Empire Strikes Back.
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back is my favourite Star Wars movie. It’s better than all the ones out there at the moment in my humble, but correct, opinion. So you can imagine my excitement when Adam Driver, who plays leading antagonist Kylo Ren, came out to say that Star Wars: Episode VIII was going to be similar to Empire Strikes Back.
Speaking to Collider, Driver had said “It’s great. It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that, people always go, 'Oooh, it’s dark,' but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear."
Driver also went on to mention the good work that director and writer Rian Johnson (pictured left) has been doing. "[Johnson] trusts that his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity," Driver said. "He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. And he’s the most polite, unassuming guy. He was appropriately territorial about some things but would still be the first to admit when something’s not working.”
When mentioning how this movie will be coming off of the back of The Force Awakens and the success it had, Driver said “The stakes are even higher, I think. No one’s relaxing. Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but I didn’t feel more relaxed as if we’d accomplished anything. It’s one more reason we have to redouble our efforts.”
With the stakes so high there is a lot of pressure for Star Wars VIII to really pull off something amazing. Especially when it’s being to compared to The Empire Strikes Back; that’s not something you’d say lightly. Johnson is deep in post-production with the movie now and with posters and trailers being released the hype machine is truly well underway for the second instalment of the sequel trilogy.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is set for a release date of 15th December 2017.
