While work on a film based on the massively popular Minecraft game is slow-going, progress is being made with Steve Carell in talks to star.
The video game adaptation currently has Rob McElhenney in the director’s chair, and Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs working on a script. There are no specifics on the film’s plot so far, but there should be plenty to work with in the sprawling open-world game in which players mine materials to build structures and (optionally) fight for survival at night. Carell hasn’t been confirmed for the film yet, but with the studio looking at a 2019 release, there’s still plenty of time.
TellTale Games have already proven that you can construct a narrative from the game with Minecraft: Story Mode, and Warner Bros. are hoping that, like The Lego Movie with its intriguing and hilarious narrative, the film could be successful enough to spawn its own cinematic universe.
