Despite some very mixed responses (read our review here) to the cinematic release, Warner Bros. have announced that Suicide Squad’s home release will feature an extended cut of the film.
A teaser trailer was posted to the movie’s Twitter page announcing the extended edition andfrom the looks of things, we’re going to be seeing more of the early days of Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn - given their mass popularity, that seems to be a wise move. Fans are also hoping to see more of Will Smith’s Deadshot, and possibly even some backstory for Slipknot.
That said, don’t get your hopes up for a radically different film from the one we saw in cinemas. The extended cut will only contain 13 minutes of extra footage, and given that so much footage for the original film was left on the cutting room floor, it will certainly be interesting to see what they include and how much of it was planned for the original release.
It will also be interesting to see how the extended cut affects the critical reception of the film. This will be the second consecutive home release from DC with an extended edition, and fans generally agree that the extended cut of Batman V Superman improved the movie in some capacity. Given how mixed the opinions of Suicide Squad are currently, it will definitely be intriguing to see whether an extended edition will tip the scales one way or the other.
The release dates for the UK are 28 November for Digital Download, followed by 4K, 3D Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and DVD on 5 December.
