After a premiere at New York Comic Con, a teaser trailer for the new Power Rangers film has been released.
The trailer was released online yesterday after a leak on the film’s Facebook page yesterday morning that was only up for a few minutes before it was deleted, but was re-posted later in the day after being spread around social media.
It looks to be promoting a grittier version of Power Rangers than fans of the original might be bargaining for, portraying the main cast as troubled teens looking for something to define their lives. We see them finding an abandoned alien ship containing the key to their powers, and we get a glimpse of Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks). There’s no sign of any Zord action yet, but that can be put down to the effects team still working on bringing the Power Rangers’ vehicles to life.
However, it’s not without its critics - or comparisons to Chronicle, the 2012 film about a group of underdog teens who bond after gaining telekinetic powers from an unknown object. Max Landis, the writer of Chronicle who was originally brought on to write the script for Power Rangers, said in a Tweet: “I wrote a silly, fun, goofy retro teen action adventure movie. They fired me, and five or so writers later, it appears they made Chronicle.” It remains to be seen just how true that actually is.
Below is the synopsis for Power Rangers:
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
