The first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes has been released, and hoo boy, it's looking real good.
War picks up where the last film left off, as Caesar (Andy Serkis) gears up for an unwanted yet necessary war against the militarised human hold-outs, lead by a villainous Colonel (Woody Harrelson going full-on beast mode).
The Planet of the Apes reboot series has truly been an embarrassment of riches these past few years, standing alone as incredible achievements of visual effects, motion capture, and the kind of masterful, sweeping, emotional story-telling we unfortunately see less and less of these days, even if they're occasionally marred by some inconsistencies (the human story line in Dawn just wasn't as interesting as the apes'). This film looks set to continue the tradition of blowing our damn socks off. Hopefully it avoids the pitfalls of its predecessor.
I must, however, also direct your attention to the original 1968 film starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall. It was a classic when it was released, and it's only become better (and more relevant) with age. The final twist is still an all-timer.
War for the Planet of the Apes is hitting UK theatres on 14th July 2017. Y'all, this upcoming summer is stacked as hell.
