The trailer for this absurdist war-based comedy drama, starring Brad Pitt as a general overseeing the conflict in Afghanistan, is out and weird.
The film, which is being directed by David Michod (he of Animal Kingdom and The Rover), is an adaptation of 'The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Story of America's War in Afghanistan' by journalist Michael Hastings. Pitt stars as General McMahon, a commander in the US armed forces brought in to naively clean up the mess, with suitably disastrous consequences.
Brad Pitt is alarmingly good at playing these kinds of characters; brimming with confidence, but utterly blinkered to their own fateful ignorance. Also starring are scads of talented actors, including Tilda Swinton, Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Scoot McNairy, and so on, all looking to turn in the kind of solid character work we know and love them for.
War Machine looks entertaining and bracing in equal measure, so be ready to hit play when it comes to Netflix on the 26th of May. Yes, it's a film on Netflix. Like it or not, this is part of our new cinematic landscape.
