The acclaimed Chinese director has reportedly been brought on direct a biopic about the dysfunctional Gucci family for Annapurna Pictures.
The film will focus on the murder of Maurizio Gucci by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani, who is set to be played by Margot Robbie. This will be Wong Kar-wai's first English-language film since 2006's My Blueberry Nights. While this writer hasn't seen that particular film, he cannot recommend the director highly enough; both In The Mood For Love and 2046 are bona fide modern classics. His most recent film was The Grandmaster, a martial arts biopic about Ip Man released in 2013.
Margot Robbie has proved time and again in the last handful of years that she is an actor to watch, so the fact that she's going to be working with a modern master like Wong Kar-wai is definitely something to be excited for. The lurid subject matter is just the icing on the cake.
The film, for now untitled, is currently early in pre-production. Things could change, as schedules might not line up and so on, but this writer is crossing his fingers.
