Despite Now You See Me 2 not performing quite as well at the box office as the first film, Lionsgate currently have a third film about the vigilante magicians in development, with Neil Widener and Gavin James now working on the script.
The writers may not be household names, but they are attracting attention after their work on Paramount’s Battle of Alcatraz and recently being hired to work on the script for San Andreas 2, starring Dwayne Johnson, for New Line.
While there are obviously no details yet re: the story, the leads from Now You See Me 2 ( Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco and Lizzy Caplan) are expected to return along with the film’s director, Jon M. Chu.
The first two films are renowned for their intricate plots and stunning visual effects - but, given Now You See Me 2’s performance commercially, it may be up to the third film to pull the series back to the success of the first. It’s certainly not impossible.
